Many of our patients in Venice, Florida are pleased to be using the Invisalign® clear aligner system to straighten their smiles. Dr. George Strickland, DDS has found great success with this alignment system for our patients who want straighter teeth without having to wear braces with brackets and wires on their teeth.

If you are currently wearing aligners for 22 hours a day in the months to come, you will want to take the best care of them that you can. Today we would like to review the ways to care for your clear aligners to ensure that they stay clean and clear as you wear them!

Step 1- When you take out your aligners, the first thing you will want to do is to rinse them with cold water. The goal is to remove bacteria and saliva to keep them clean.

Step 2-  Did we mention using cold water? You never want to clean them with hot water as it can warp your aligners, this means no matter how tempted you are to run them through the dishwasher, please don’t.

Step 3- If you have removed your aligners to eat, whether it is to snack or eat a meal, you will want to brush and floss your teeth to remove any trapped food particles that can lead to bacteria production and tooth decay.

Step 4- Clean your aligners with antibacterial soap and rinse thoroughly afterward. Toothpaste can scratch your aligners which will make them more visible when you are wearing them. Be sure to remove any soapy residue by rinsing well before putting your aligners back in.

Step 5- You might think using mouthwash to sanitize your aligners would be ideal. The problem is, mouthwashes that are green and blue will also tint your aligners and affect their clear color. You can safely soak them in a denture cleaner or retainer cleaner that is clear-colored to prevent unintentional discoloration.
